A scarce 1690 solid sterling silver English trefid tablespoon with a beaded or ribbed rattail. This spoon has all the classic characteristics, but with a rubbed date mark. The maker mark is strong for Thomas Allen, considered one of England's top 20 spoonmakers. The reverse of the terminal scratch initialled 'G/R*M' Rattail shows wear. Nonetheless, a nice light-medium gauge spoon. Slight upturn of the terminal. Condition is overall good. A scarce and exceedingly rare form in this large size. the reverse of the bowl with a ribbed rat-tail, the reverse of the terminal scratch initialled 'A*C', length 19.8cm, approx. weight 1.7oz.
